A "progressive" view of of the overall economic system of the world. Why are the poor poor and the rich rich? What systems are in place to keep things in place? Graphic description of the dismantling of the American Dream: harder work, lower wages, greater insecurity and inequality. Good reviews from solid economists (from Wharton School, Harvard, Columbia University, and others) so this isn't baseless propaganda. Helps you understand the big picture of what's happening in our world. Published more than 10 years ago, but still very current. For example, how has NAFTA helped create the current immigration problem? Read and learn. Title of the book is stolen from Martin Luther King, Jr.

All interested in truth, read this.

Holly Sklar always does such a complete job with her subjects. She is incredibly clear and focused. I tend to read quite a bit of this type of literature and many times it can a bit like. . . Rant over here . . . Then Rant over there, without reaching a logical conclusion. Holly Sklar has never suffered from that. This book is very very very well researched. It should be read with the idea that the title has in mind. We really do have a choice to make in this country. Let's make the decision from a point of knowledge. Bravo Holly.

Revealing, truthful, about our society today!!

I heard the author speak on PBS radio and then read the book. Sklar explains how and why we Americans are working harder than ever today, but seem to get "nowhere." I think every business owner, politician, teacher, and parent should read this book to better understand how we can help one another in this country and the world!

Read this book, then read it again.

Important, a compendium of shocking statistics and stories about the sorry state of the state. Most depressing, but most enlightening. Occasionally bogs down in statistics, and perhaps too many tables, though it's always nice to have these for reference. Much to be learned here. I plan to reread this one again soon. Alan Nicoll

This book is the best "How To" book I've ever read. I'm not one for instructional manuals, but when my puppy came home and decided the carpet was the best place to relieve himself time after time, I was desperate. This book taught me not only how to potty train my pup, but also how to play with him in the best way to keep him from biting and snapping later in life. The author is a dog trainer and knows what she's talking about. All of the info was easy to understand and easy to put into use in every day life. A pretend schedule is included for various situations such as introducing your puppy to other people. The book also has amusing antidotes about either the author's pets or other people's pets she has run across. The author explains what you should do as far as training and play goes and why you should do it. She has some consequenses included. This is a wonderful book for a first time puppy-lover. It is a must have! Keep it next to the dog food and newspapers!

Wonderful!

This book truly gets down to the nuts and bolts of the question: What does it mean to be a Christian? These foundational messages are truly challenging and encourage us to a deeper, more fulfilling and more intimate life with God. Reading this book helped shape my theology about 15 years ago and set me on fire for the Lord.. through which, God truly changed my life.

Keith Green was a man who clearly heard the voice of God and followed it. This book attacks the issues of true repentance, zealousness, suffering, and spiritual coldness, all in a manner that spurs one into action and soul-searching.

Why is it that many old important books are not reprinted?

Keith Green is really a good example of a follower of Christ. Besides that he had a very interesting story and made wonderful music. I was so blessed to borrow this book of a friend, not knowing Keith Green. The book is very strong and tells many basic truths. It's scaring to read truths about the gospel that he wrote long time ago and then see that christians today are blinded by the exact problem. This book belongs to every christian's shelve in my opinion.

It's my hope that it one day will be reprinted.

An incredible book every christian should read

Menopause often brings sleep restlessness and insomnia. I learned a
few months ago I also have sleep apnea and am now using an IPAP machine.
Listening to this CD helps me drift off to sleep without extra stress.
The machine can be uncomfortable and annoying and this music helps
distract me and take me to a peaceful place more easily. I tend to sleep
more deeply than I have in years.
The music is quite unusual....almost like the sound of distant drums,
or distant rumble of thunder...but in a comforting way. If you need to
stay awake, don't put this music on! Its like heavy metal weights for
the eyelids!

The best and the brightest on Historical Statistics (I)

Review Date: 2007-07-21
In the last few years I have been searching books offering a general overview of the past, and I have realized that many books entitled "History of ...whatever" only provide information about the West, the rest of the world being almost ignored.

Maddison's on world economy is different, it is truly global. It offers historical statistics of the last two thousand years and is to be read together with "The world economy: Historical Statistics " (a combined edition of both volumes is to be published on December 2007). In my opinion this is masterful work that can be savored by the professional historian and educated layperson alike, so my rate is between 5 (content) and 4 (pleasure, sometimes falling to 3, sometimes raising to 5). I highly recommend the two volumes.

Other works whose scope is as amazingly global as Maddison's and which I would suggest reading (hoping that will be of use for those looking for a broad framework to understand ourselves) are the following: 1. Agrarian cultures: "Pre-industrial societies" by Patricia Crone; 2. Government: "The History of Government" by S.E. Finer; 3. Ideas: "Ideas, a History from Fire to Freud", by Peter Watson; 4. Religion: "The Phenomenon of Religion: A Thematic Approach" by Moojan Momen; and 5. War: "War in Human Civilization" by Azar Gat.

Angus Maddison's The World Economy: A Millennial Perspective is highly unique because of the long historical perspective it brings to the understanding of global economic development and fluctuations. Maddison provides data on population growth, per-capita income, and gross domestic product on regional, national, and global levels for the last 1000 years. The last two centuries receive special attention. For more books on economic development go to my profile and see my Amazon Listmania "Future Studies Reading List."

Attempting to put numbers on past economic activity is a deeply fraught exercise, as the author freely admits.

That being said, this is a book full of useful information and striking estimates. I know of no better place to get a genuine feel for the economic history of the last millennia, but particularly the last two centuries. There is something to startle or surprise anyone within these pages. A necessary edition to the library of anyone seriously interested in history.

This book is seemingly a culmination of the painstaking works taken by Angus Maddison for decades. As I liked his previous works such as the Phases of Capitalist Development, so I like this book very much. Of course, the book contains many 'guesstimations' that are unacceptable to today's economists' rigor. This is more so when the author ventures into almost two millenia before 1820, for which he did relatively little work previously. But even here the book apparently provides reasonable figures synthesizing existing evidences with a lucid interpretation, providing illuminating starting points for future studies.

Although this is a great book overall - it's geared in some areas for kids aged 4 years and older. The nice thing is that you can learn these principles and apply them to a toddler and look back over them for furure use. It really makes you think about all the forms of discipline and correction and decide which is best for the given situation. It gives loving guidance for the manner in which you correct your child's behavior.

In a class for marriage and family ministry the professor said that this was the best book in the category of childraising. I was a bit skeptical. But after reviewing nearly 50 books on the topic I had to agree. It includes basic theology on the subject, and tons of helpful teaching/guidelines. The format is also very pracitcal with exercises on each sub-category to help the reader evaluate what he thinks and practices. It helps him evaluate what values he holds and why. It then leads the reader to formulate biblically based convictions on various areas of raising children. One of the most informed and helpful sections is on how to discipline and have an overplan to develop/discipline a child. It discusses how intentional, positive discipline differs from punishment and a punishment-oriented style or childrearing.

This book gives you awesome tools and skills needed.

This book is an excellent guide to Biblical teachings on discipline! You will learn God's plan for discipline of His children and how discipline of our own children should mirror it. This book will also help you understand the difference between discipline (training for correction and maturity administered in love and concern) and punishment (infliction of a penalty for an offense and past misdeeds usually administered in hostility and frustration) while providing plenty of tips on how to discipline using the six methods of correction.

Gordon Graham brings his quick wit, and common sense approach to distribution inventory. His book gives the reader a wide variety of approach methods, formulas, procedures, and thought process for use in distribution inventory. Even the most experienced inventory manager would be irresponsible by ignoring this work. With Graham's casual matter of fact manner, and obvious self confidence in inventory practices that have proven themselves time and again the reader is quickly exposed to at least one method of approach to serving the customer, and the bottom line with equal respect and care.

A fascinating book

Review Date: 2003-09-28
In this fascinating book, Professor David Trobisch of the University of Heidelberg details his examination of the early Bible manuscripts, and his conclusion that during the second century A.D., that a group of editors produced a Bible that became the archetype for all subsequent Bibles, though the original "Canonical Edition" has been forgotten. This overturns decades of belief that the New Testament was compiled haphazardly over a long period of time, in different locations, and had to be harmonized at a later date.

Through examinations of the earliest of Bible manuscripts, the author takes you on a fascinating tour of what this Canonical Edition contained, how it was organized, and how it was supposed to be read. I must say that that I found this book to be absolutely fascinating. The author makes a good argument supporting his conclusion, and gives the reader a good idea of what this original Bible must have looked like. My one and only complaint against this book is that the author does not examine who these editors were.

But, that said, this is a great book, a fascinating book that I highly recommend. I also highly recommend David Trobisch's subsequent book, Paul's Letter Collection.

Eye-opening and persuasive!

You don't need to know New Testament Greek to follow Trobisch's arguments. Although an astute reader and clever interpreter of textual evidence, Trobisch spares us the usual myopia and nit picking textual critics like to heap upon their readers. He avoids discussions of authorial authenticity that so easily put many people on the defensive. Instead, he helps the reader appreciate larger redactional issues of how the different components of the New Testament relate to one another. By making comparisons to familiar modern publishing practices, Trobisch makes his arguments easily accessible to the modern reader (for example, he shows how the decisions publishers and editors make and the conventions they establish can affect the final form of the text as much, perhaps, as those of the authors.) There's much here I'll want to re-examine when I've done more reading in this area, but on my first read-through I found Trobisch's thesis exciting and refreshing. This book has certainly changed the way I'll be reading the New Testament from now on.

Trobisch's aim was "to describe the history of the Canonial Edition by analyzing the oldest existing copies and tracing the edition back to the time and place of first publication. With this method, Greek manuscripts became more important witnesses than the lists of canonical writings, quotes from biblical literature, and debates about the authenticity of certain writings, translations, and so on." (p. 37) By doing this, Trobisch is able to draw some interesting conclusions: (1) that the editors of the New Testament took great care in naming the different sections of the Bible, and in doing so validated, rather than minimized, the place of the Old Testament in the Christian Bible, (2) that the sequence of the four Gospels as we have it today is a tradition of long-standing, and one that makes good sense even though it means separating Luke from Acts (his explanation of the role of John 21 in this regard is truly fascinating, p. 96ff), (3) that the "first edition" of the New Testament would have positioned the General Letters after Acts and before the Letters of Paul (the logic being, in part, that the first half of Acts introduces the reader to Peter, John and James, and it is only in the second part that Acts starts to focus on the missionary efforts of Paul), (4) that the editors used an elegant system of internal cross referencing to validate both the authority of the leaders in Jerusalem and of Paul (this seeming harmony serving as a unified barrier against Marcionite error), and (5)that the editors managed to straddle the potentially devisive issue of the date upon which Easter should be celebrated by including both the Synoptic and Johannine traditions. Just to name a few! And don't skip the fascinating discussion of the codex ("bound book") v. the scroll in the establishment of the Canonical Edition of the Bible (p. 69-77).

I must admit the flow of Trobisch's argument was so engrossing that I never really examined the endnotes. But they're there and they're detailed. The bibliography is substantial, too (but be warned, it includes a high percentage of German works).

This book is truly worth the investment (both in money and in the time you'll spend digging into it). Treat yourself!

This book presents compelling evidence to the early existence of a canon for the New Testament. The subject of the canon is not addressed often enough in textual criticism, especially books aimed at the lay person. Trobisch asserts that the common approach of dating the canon to the fourth century is flawed, and points out several features that lead to the conclusion that Christians had a canon long before the generally accepted dates. This thesis has an impact not only for the scholar, but for the average Christian who desires to know the provenance of the books upon which he bases his faith.

This is a startling book, and well worth a detailed read. If Trobisch is right in his conclusions about an early edition of the New and Old Testament, we have much to investigate in this new light. I was persuaded by his carefully reasoned and extremely well documented arguments. And I find the material intensely exciting. What more can Trobisch point out to us, using only the text of scripture itself as he has done here? I can't wait to see response from the academic community to this excellent and compelling work.
