Reading this book, one gets the impression that the author has a need to dazzle the readers with her business vocabulary and acumen. I wasn't dazzled or impressed. I found it distracting. If you are looking for an ancient e-commerce guide, this is your book. Check the copyright date. You will find some solid and timeless principles but I wouldn't waste my time. If you are serious about learning logistics and fulfillment for your e-business, find something that is current and up-to-date with the industry.

Logistics And Fulfillment For e-Business: A Practical Guide To Mastering Back Office Functions For Online Commerce is a straightforward instructional manual to the basic logistics of designing, managing, and running an efficient model for profitable e-commerce regardless of the product or service being offered. From outsourcing technology; to dealing profitably with shipping costs (including the pros and cons of USPS versus other package shippers); to handling customer relations in e-Business; and much, much more, Logistics And Fulfillment For e-Business is a handy, user friendly, "how-to" reference with invaluable, practical advice for any merchant or entrepreneur setting up an e-storefront to supplement (or replace) a traditional brick-and-mortar based commercial operation.

As a (non-IT) executive of an established brick & mortar retailer which is about to start selling online, I wanted to get a god practical understanding of the many issues related to e-commerce logistics. I threw away this book after wasting on it 2 hours, when I realized I still had not learned a single new thing.
The author's hands-on experience with the subject is clearly limited, and the writing style is that of a consultant: if you take away all the buzzwords and the high-level and over-used strategical concepts, hardly any content is left.
This book is probably a compilation of marketing information found on the top 100 websites that come up in Google if you search for "e-commerce logistics". You may find the book useful only if you work in IT and need an overview of what various software vendors have to offer in this area.

This book by Martin Christopher, is one of the better if not among the best books on supply chain management. Written by Professor Martin Christopher of the Cranfield School of Management, the book deals particularly with best practices in supply chain management in the current era of globalization. Responsiveness, reliability and relationships are the basis for successful logistics and supply chain management. Strategies like Just-In-Time (JIT), Lean and Agile thinking are reviewed, and last not least, there is a very solid chapter on supply chain risk, which is what interested me in particular. That chapter alone is worth buying the book.

Excellent Advanced SCM Book - Repost
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-05
This is a wonderful book and introduces the practioner to some of the frontiers of strategically driven service response logistics. In other words how to design, deploy and organize integrated SCM for corporate strategic reasons, not just for functional cost control. Probably one of three key books for understanding the frontiers and highly recommended.

Key is the process, customer value and system integration perspectives threaded throughout but particularly in the last several chapters. The chaper on service response logistics is worth the price of the book.

As a practioner dealing with advanced SCM I found this very worthwhile and found myself wishing I'd written it. If you are relatively new to the field you need a decent baseline grounding and Stock & Lambert's book on 'Strateigc Logistics' is a perfect complement. To move slightly higher up the food chain get the recent compilation of HBR articles called 'Managing the Value Chain'. Together the three make a perfect bookshelf set for any practioner, student or corporate executive who needs to understand what integrated logistics, SCM or the future of e-business might be doing to your career or your firm's competitive prospects !

After reading many books about logistics and supply chain issues, this third edition adds value to the field.

The author confirms his visionary approach and provides new thinking on supply chain risk and resilience. Not only agility is now more elaborated and explained as an important logistics strategy together with leaness, but also, hybrid strategies are proposed and practical cases are developed.

As always, the author ends with a view to the future and introduce the readers in the ever challenging thoughs of business transformations.

Review Date: 2007-02-08
After reading various textbooks on logistics, quantitative analysis and strategy, this book was very refreshing, in large part from the fact that it is a short and non-technical book. The title of my review says it all, this book is summary for busy people wanting to get som insights into what is going on in logistics and organizational theory . I got through the book in two readings, which is a very valuable aspect for busy people.
Still, despite being brief, it touches on most important aspects, and points you to further areas of importance if what you read here makes you want to change things in your organization.
So: Not technical, easy read, 4 stars instead of 5 because it is too brief to be truly useful for those that actually want to learn the subject-matter.

PS: The printing I recieved was a defect, pages 247 to 278 missing (Replaced by duplicate pages 215-246), ust watch out for that.

Refreshing, common-sense appraoch to leadership
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-22
Hans Finzel makes the case that poor leadership habits are often the byproduct of observing others' poor leadership habits. This book suggests a concise list of such habits for leaders to dissect and change, with anecdotal examples as well as clear action items that can be implemented tomorrow morning.

Generally, Dr. Finzel solves his Top Ten list of mistakes using the strategies of servant leadership (the basis of the author's own success in church leadership), and he supports his writing with Biblical quotes and his own view on modeling one's actions after Christ's.

However, Finzel generally delivers plain-spoken, well-explained concepts that can be employed in most companies and organizations. Whatever your religion, his strategies embrace a positive, ethical approach to leadership that has been glaringly absent in many corporate American cultures in recent years.

This title probably didn't make a bestseller list, but it is a hidden gem for both established and emerging leaders who wish to prevent or improve upon common poor habits -- a refreshing change of pace from the mainstream best-sellers. For the price, it belongs in your leadership library.

Some very important insights that stand the test of time
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-26
This book was written in 1994 and yet when I picked up a copy to read recently it presents concepts absolutely essential to today's corporate environment. This is all the more remarkable considering that his original audience for his book were those in leadership positions in the church. Thus, throughout the book are both organizational and spiritual concepts.

The book is divided neatly into ten chapters, each dealing with a "mistake" and providing the counter examples of how these leadership issues can be reversed to allow for more growth within the organization and better leadership.

The titles of the ten chapters are themselves fascinating and excellent at describing the leadership mistakes. They include; The top-down attitude; Putting paperwork before people work; The absence of affirmation; No room for mavericks; Dictatorship in decision-making; Dirt delegation; Communication chaos; Missing the clues of corporate culture; Success without successors; Failure to focus on the future.

Each of these chapters presents some outstanding insights into how leaders fail to make the most of their people, and get results. One in particular is always the challenge of leadership in most corporations, the "No room for mavericks" describes how the most creative, and insightful of employees are often forced to comply with the inside-the-box thinking of the organizations current status. Of course, without "mavericks" many companies simply fade out of existence, and many others become a shadow of what they once were. Yet today inside many corporations are leaders so focused on compliance and control, that they may control away their futures, and drive those who are innovative away to other places.

This book is simple, straightforward, and completely accurate. Very highly recommended, as nearly every chapter could be a book in itself.

This is not a secular discussion of leadership
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-16
What none of the reviewers mention is that this is NOT a purely secular discussion of leadership. Finzel takes a Christian approach to leadership effectiveness. For example, when discussing why people tend to rely on an autocratic leadership style, one of the explanations he gives is, "It reflects the depravity of man. Satan began the problem when he wanted to get out from under submission to God the Father. So he rebelled and led his own band of rebels to bring rebellion to the world" (p. 26). Passages from the Bible are used in support of Finzel's advice and many of the examples are drawn from his personal experience in faith-based organizations. I don't have a problem with this per se but I would have preferred to know this in advance. This is not a text that I would be able to use in my organization where religion is considered a personal and private topic.

Best Power-packed Practical Book on Leadership

Simpy put, if I had to choose only ONE book on leadership to have, this would be it. One, Finzel's book is power-packed and very too-the-point. He wastes little time with redundant examples, but chooses them carefully to illustrate his points. Hence, two, this is a quick read. Three, it is one worth re-reading, and then savoring.

Charming Early Pilcher
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-14
I don't think that Rosamunde Pilcher could write a bad book, but this, one of her earliest, is one of her best. It has all the wonderful Pilcher elements: the stately old home gone slightly shabby; the wonderfully individual characters (in this case, in Scotland rather than Pilcher's often-used Cornwall venue); the stalwart hero/heroines bearing secret grief in silence.

Our heroine, Flora, suddenly finds at age 22 that she has an identical twin from whom she was separated at birth. That twin, Rose, is everything that Flora is not--and does not wish to be. But before Flora can find this out, she is drawn into a ridiculous and dangerous scheme. She will impersonate Rose, who has jilted her perfectly nice fiance Antony, in front of Antony's dying grandmother, Tuppy.

Thus begins a fraught journey to the aforementioned crumbling estate in Scotland, a love-at-first-sight meeting with the grandmother, and a week-long charade that brings Flora close to permanent disaster, and changes everyone around her. Of course the reader prays for a happy ending and a nice, bracing cup of hot tea.

Simply a gem. If this is a Pilcher you have missed, give yourself a treat and curl up with it at the first opportunity.

Review Date: 2003-01-18
Improbability, coincidence and pure fate take center stage as identical twins separated at birth come upon their mirror image quite accidentally while in a London restaurant. After a night spent puzzling through the bizarre circumstances of their lives, jet-setting sister Rose takes off to Greece -- leaving her much more down-to-earth twin Flora to deal with a recently dumped fiancé. Somehow Flora is convinced to accompany the fiancé to Scotland to comfort a grandmother who is supposedly dying. The drama mounts, as does the dishonesty, and Flora finds herself living a life she never imagined. When the house of cards begins to collapse, will the friendships survive the betrayal? And, has the right sister fallen for the wrong man? A bit of a relic, but cozy as a cup of tea on a cold and windy Scottish coast.

Deceptions Hurt the Heart!

Every family hides something, but Flora Waring discovered deception in hers. At 22 she learned she had an identical twin sister, Rose, who lived with the mother Flora didn't remember at all. And when Flora ended up impersonating the high-spirited, spoiled Rose, she would have to face how cruel lies can be. When she agreed to accompany Rose's fiance to meet his grandmother in a picturesque town on the Scottish coast, she would quickly fall in love with the lush green countryside, the Armstrong family, and a rare, wonderful man. But she would also confront Rose's shocking secrets and a betrayal that would break her heart.

This was a great read as all of Pilcher's books are! I became very engrossed in this story.

Cozy Tale of Deception and Romance on the Scottish Coast

Review Date: 2007-08-14
When I'm looking for a book that is comforting and cozy, I can always turn to Rosamunde Pilcher. Her stories are perfect for returning readers to a simpler time when family was all that mattered and desires of the heart were satisfied in due course.

UNDER GEMINI, one of my favorites of her earlier and shorter novels, is based on a spur-of-the-moment deception in which one twin steps into a situation pretending to be the other twin. An aging matriarch, a sprawling Scottish mansion, and the extended household who welcome the impostor add both complication and charm to this enjoyable tale.

Flora Waring never knew she had a twin until a chance meeting in a London restaurant reveals betrayal and family secrets. When twin Rose Schuster wants to dump her fiancé and head off to Greece with a new paramour, it is Flora who pretends to be Rose and plays the part of the happy fiancé. Doing the wrong thing for the right reason backfires on Flora and she finds herself trapped in a web of lies in the midst of a family she has come to love.

Among the enchanting characters are: Tuppy, the bed-ridden matriarch; Isobel, the spinster daughter; Antony, the charming grandson; Anna, the betrayed wife; Brian, the philandering husband; and Dr. Hugh Kyle, the often morose widower who confuses and bemuses Flora's life.

The truth simplifies everything and we can close the book reassured that happiness is attainable and a cup of tea is always in order.

A delightful story

Covers a week in the life of Flora, one of twins, each raised by one parent when they separated. Flora is 22 and returning to London from Cornwell where she has spent the last year with her Dad and his new wife. She accidently runs into her sister, rose and they discover their story. Their Mom is married to a rich man and rose takes Flora to the luxury apt. they have in London. Emter Anthony Armstrong who was engaged to Rose. His granny is dying and wants to see Anthony and Rose. He talks Flora into posing as Rose and go with him to his home in Scotland for the weekend. Informed Consent tells the story about a doctor and researcher, Jeffrey Cramer, who has discovered a possible cure for AIDS. The media loves him. But guilt from accidents that wreak havoc on the lives of those he loves plaques him and spurs him toward work, taking him away from his family. When another accident? sabotage? brings about horrible results with his cure, the media and the hospital turns against him. Now his own son's life hangs in the balance. Dare he use the cure to save his son's life, even if it means unethical medical practices?

The writings propels you forward, forward, forward in the action, and deep into the character's psyche. Sandi doesn't waste a single word. Each scene spins with meaning.

Nothing is simple. Even when characters make decisions that you know are wrong, you don't question the character. Sandi doesn't give you predictable or easy answers. Flaws pepper the pages, yet these characters aren't pure evil. They are you and me trying out to figure out truth in this messy world.

REVIEW: WARNING: After reading "Informed Consent" you will NEVER look at Doctors and nurses the same way again. After all they are just humans like the rest of us right? I know there is office politics in whatever work environment but when you read about what goes on in the inner workings of a hospital it makes you a little sick to your stomach.

When Hospital personnel make mistakes on the job or don't follow procedure or don't get "INFORMED" consent patients are put at risk and some die. Sandra definitely explores how some doctors try to get around "Informed Consent" and what that means to the patients.

How is the cure for AIDS going to be found? Sandra reveals one way; thru that of a Dr./Researcher who is personally motivated by personal tragedy to find a cure for what killed his father but not himself. Could finding the cure for his fathers death lead to a break thru the whole world is looking for? It could happen!

Parts of this book were medically wordy. Some where stressful to read because it dealt with children and possible medical mishaps that put them in harms way. Then there were other parts of the book that were fast paced - thrilling and emotionally suspenseful!! Buckle up when you read this book.

One of the best books I've read this year!

Review Date: 2007-11-03
I almost didn't accept this book to review as I had SO many to read, but the subject matter intrigued me. Now I'm glad I took this book on. I'll tell you why...Informed Consent is one of the most emotional, suspenseful, intelligent, and exhilarating stories I've read in a long time. The up-close look into marriage issues, grief and loss, and biomedical/ethical subject matter makes me rank this amazing novel as one of the best I've read this year. It is SO obvious that the author did a lot of research and she addressed the subject with insight and compassion. This story moved me to tears numerous times.

In some ways Informed Consent--which is a perfect title for the story--reminded me of a movie I watched starring Denzel Washington. In the movie he was stuck in an impossible situation and yet found a way to fix the problem. His solution was totally insane, but it sure made you think about the desperation people feel when they long to save a loved one, but face seemingly impossible barriers along the way. Informed consent tackled some really tough issues with finesse.

I'm reluctant to share much detail regarding this awesome novel because it's very suspenseful and I don't want the reader to miss out on the anxiety-provoking twists and turns by tipping them off to some of the dilemmas and solutions. But I will say that this story not only provokes intelligent thinking, but it makes you ponder spiritual issues as well. I am thoroughly impressed by the quality of the plot, the author's incredible "voice", and the pull this story had on me. I can't say enough good things about it, but I will say that from this point forward I intend to read EVERY book Sandra Glahn writes.

Glahn is a superb researcher and it shows in this fine novel. She is a great writer and one to watch. She gets better with each novel.

If you live and breathe IT security, this books is for you. I would like to somewhat disagree with some of the earlier reviewers. I don't think this book was intended to be "the one and only" penetration toolkit manual. However, what it does do - it introduces one to the world of penetration testing providing enough information and examples on a wide variety of tools. A lot of great subjects are covered, such as reconnaissance, enumeration, scanning, web application testing, wireless penetration and more. It's a very insightful read, even for those who are just researching in the area of security. It will open your eyes on many aspects of information security. The CD itself is a good resource, but you may need to update some applications by now. Nessus signatures do get updated regularly.

At around 700 pages in size, the 'Penetration Tester's Open Source Toolkit' by Johnny Long is a solid reference material which is a nice pickup for anyone that is concerned with this subject matter. As with all Syngress books, you aren't buying these for the highest quality paper or design, but rather the material within. This is a solid book that most users should find helpful in their jobs.

Each chapter is a stand-alone lesson, and all chapters build on each other to create a big-picture of exploiting any network and reporting results. The CD that comes with the book gives you excellent tools to start or fill out your library. Some are getting dated as of this writing, but all are still solid tools that you can update once you've learned them.
I highly recommend this book!

Title: Penetration Tester's Open Source Toolkit

This book not only covers what tools are available for penetration testing but also details how to use them to effectively test the system. Some of the tools, such as whois and ping, will be very familiar to the Linux user and most power users of other operating systems. Other tools are less familiar but very powerful and a real insight into what can be done to gather information on a system before attempting to penetrate it. Part of what makes this book really interesting is the way the authors approach this subject. They don't walk the reader through all the details of a handful of tools but instead they take a task-oriented approach. For example they go first through enumerating and scanning a system, then testing databases, web server testing, web application testing, wireless penetration and network devices. They then end this section with information about writing open source security tools. Chapter 8 starts a section on the Open Source vulnerability scanner Nessus. It automatically finds many problems in the system by trying to penetrate it using various scripts. The results are captured and the generated reports detail the information it was able to obtain. This is a very powerful testing product and one of the most common ones you will find in the marketplace.
The authors detail how to set up a Nessus client and server, scan the system and understand the results. Although almost three hundred pages are dedicated to Nessus it is a very powerful and highly configurable program that can consume a full book by itself to use its full potential. Penetration Tester's Open Source Toolkit is highly recommended, insightful, and very interesting to read and experiment with.

Basically this is a one of the standard refenence books for power system people who do research or development work. It's massive, and the information is in there somewhere.

I think this book is a valuable one for both practricing engineers and academecians. It provides basic theory of synchronous machines and devlops models for the same. It gives an over view of fundmentals of power system stability (transient and small signal. It includes modeling of generators, governors, exciters and stabilizers in the simulation of system stability. Also covered in the text is the voltage stability and several examples.

I recommend to both graduate students and power system engineers in the field.

A great reference to have

Contains very little information

This book is very disappointing to use. One one hand, it is well written, and very clear to understand. But on the other hand, it contains *very* little information, almost everything I needed I had to find on the net, or search the man pages. It claims "not to be a reference". Then why buy it at all! I'd rather buy a book which teaches the material *and* contains all the information I need.

The best way to learn Tcl/Tk, and a great reference

Although more detailed books like Welch's 'Practical Programming in Tcl and Tk' are very useful, Ousterhout's original book is still the best way to learn the language. His style is clear and concise, and he covers the core of the language with good examples and thorough explanatory text.

The layout is clean and easy to read, without any space wasted on fancy graphics or eye-candy. Instead, you get clear tables laying out what happens, or listing the commands in a certain functionality area. For example, page 122 has a table I've gone back to many times that lists the different return values from catch.

Even though I have and use other Tcl books, when I just want to check a point of syntax or verify functionality, this is the one I go to. It's an invaluable book for a Tcl/Tk developer.

Great starter!

I read this book in a matter of days. It flies by quite fast. It lacks examples but I thought it gave me enough information to be able to figure out the other things. Besides by working out problems do you learn best and this book gives you the basics to do that. Explains well and doesn't go on and on and on. Good starter if you want to learn Tcl/Tk

This is Just a Great Book

I've read other books written by the authors of the language, and found them to be lacking. But this author's book is really well organized, thoughtful, clear, and has great explanations. I was up and running creating widgets, etc. in a matter of no time.

I think this book is more of an instructional guide (and a damn good one too), but I don't believe it is oriented as a reference guide. I know that there were a few gripes on this should be both, but I wouldn't want that. Technology changes, so I prefer references to remain online. Gone are the days to cart a wheel-barrel of reference material for a given project, only to be obsoleted in a few years.

This book opened the doors to the great wonderful world of Tcl/Tk. And I am confident it will help others in years to come.

Excellent book - still the best

A movie that may teach all the things your parents tried to but couldn't quite put in words. Seeing this movie will lift your spirits and make you want to be a better person. There is hope for the world if we all try harder to be kind and thoughtful. I don't know if I can pull it off but I am trying. While you are watching the movie you don't even feel like you are being taught anything new. Kinda sneeky!

I watched the movie The Ultimate Gift and thought it was a really great story. A story that I could learn a lot from. This book take up where the movie left off and reveals the dynamics in different types of families.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. It holds a persons interest right from the beginning. It has its serious moments, yet there is plenty of humor.

The characters were very life-like. I especially liked Jason, the main character, who took months and a lot of thought to prove himself. Judge Stanford A. Davis was a judge we would all like to have in our court system; he was a man who cared.

The ending was a little different than I thought it would be, I'm glad it wasn't predictable.
A great read!

This is not a sequel

Maybe everyone else read a different book than I did, but this really isn't a sequel to "The Ultimate Gift". It is more of a rewrite of the book. It brings nothing new to the table Nearly half of the book is quotes of the first book when the Judge reviews the videotapes of Red Stevens. Then Jason Stevens recounts the stories he told in the first book about how he fulfilled the requirements of his inheritance. This book is pointless.

Another problem I had with the book is that there are numerous inconsistencies. In the second book, Jason is Red's grandson rather than his great nephew. He explains it away in a pathetic manner. Also, in the first book, the will was written ten years earlier, while in the second book, it was weeks before his death. Another inconsistency lies with the little girl with Cancer. In the first book, she is playing in the park with her nurse. In the second, she is with her mom. I could go on and on about other inconsistencies, but I won't bore you. I think the author needs to go back and read the first book then rewrite this one or just do away with this one altogether.

Well Worth Reading

The premise of this sequel to the book The Ultimate Gift (The Ultimate Series #1) is that the greedy relatives are going after the will. For each of the twelve gifts, Jason must demonstrate not only that he has earned the gift, but that he has learned how to pass it on to others.

What one can learn from this book is how to pass on the ultimate gift to others.

Like the first book, the structure is somewhat boring, but the lessons presented are excellent. If you can get around each lesson being presented in essentially the same way, the content of the lessons are enjoyable and very well worth your time to read this book.

If you saw the movie The Ultimate Gift but didn't read the book, you can jump right in with reading this book, or you can go back and read The Ultimate Gift first. I went from movie to this book and then the first book, and had no trouble with it.

Great sequel to a great book

This is an excellent sequel to "The Ultimate Gift". It continues the story, and satisfactorily further explains the lessons. Please get this, and see the movie of the first book!
