Miracles Woven With Impeccable Research

Not only did I love reading this book, but my in-laws, who survived Nazi occupied Holland during WW II, could hardly believe Ms. Pinkston's didn't live through it, too, since her facts were right on. My mother-in-law also said, "Miracles did happen during that time."
I love the combination of facts and the feelings of the characters in this dramatic World War II-era depiction.

Darwin's first great achievement
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-31
On the voyage of the Beagle--before he had ever seen a coral reef--Darwin had deduced an explanation of the geological processes that created them by applying Charles Lyell's explanation of uplift and subsidence. Accordingly, he posited that the Chilean coast had been rising while the ocean floor was subsiding. When he finally explored some barrier reefs, he knew that since the polyps could not live deeper than 120 feet, and all the coral below that was dead, the confirmation of the reefs' great depth was evidence of subsidence--a theory that has stood the test of time. This is an attractive and affordable edition of Darwin's treatise.

Tales of Distribution is fun, well written and easy to read.

Tales of Distribution is a college textbook worth reading if you need to put statistics at your command! Spats'z style is helpful to the reader and down to earth. This is a heavy-duty treatment of the topic; however, interesting examples of how to use statistics in day-to-day life makes this topic come alive. If you read this book, you will never be intimidated by statistics in your lifetime.

The author's discussion of "Rationale of ANOVA" and "Hypothesis Testing" is excellent. Frequent use of algebraic explanation is joined with graphic explanations to help the reader visualize the author's points. "Work Problems" at the end of each chapter show imagination and creativity. The author seems to have a sincere desire to help the reader at every turn along their journey of statistical discovery. The author also seems to have privilege insight into the reader's mind. He anticipates what the reader is thinking, and serves up a helping of practical advice at the exact perfect moment.

As a market-research practitioner, I found the book to be very refreshing and enjoyable to read. I read it on my summer vacation! My daughter purchased the book as the required text for her statistics class at UCLA. At the end of her class she had planned to sell the book back to the UCLA bookstore. After looking at the book for 60 seconds, I said to her "No, don't sell this book. This is great book. Keep it." To which she replied; "But Dad, I need the money. You can keep it if you pay me for it." To which I replied; "Haven't I paid for this book once already? If I pay you for it now, that would be the second time I bought the same book."

I found Stepehn R.Covey's classic very good and useful but I admit his son has done a better job at explaining the 7 Habits.

Even if this book has been designed for teenagers I would define it more like 7 Habits for Dummies!

Great book with a very entertaining layout!

If you want to understand the way globalization is evolving, and nature of the super-rich who are thriving in this economy and shaping it, you will want to read Haseler. The author provides insights into an elite that wields amazing power and is far different than any super-rich class in history.

This book shines a bright light on the emergence of a global liberal economy and the threat it poses to political systems, nations, all people working and living in nation-states, and world-wide stability. The author delves into both historical background and the realities of globalization as it is impacting people everywhere. It presents fundamental challenges that nations are just now beginning to recognize, and it makes our fast-changing world of economics, politics and social struggles, comprehendable.

This is a book to savor; one that is unusually insightful. Very highly recommended!

A Whole World of Supply Chain Opportunity I Didn't Know Was There
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-22
I was sceptical when I first noticed this book because I don't consider liquids an important part of the supply chain in our company. This book is a real eye-opener! First Klatch peels back the covers that are "hiding" liquids in so many businesses like ours, and then goes on to show how much more effectively we can handle these products than what we are doing now.
I really liked the "real world" approach in the book. Rather than throwing some theoretical method out there, it shows how we can improve to different levels in our handling of the liquid supply chain, we can go as far as we want at any particular time using the methods described in the book.
Finally, the book understands that there is a real human reader on the other end and uses a lot of examples and stories from business, science, and history to make its point. I'll never think of "silo thinking" the same way again!

A Brilliant Analysis of Three "Key" Interrelationships
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-08

As Sunil Chopra and Peter Meindl explain in their Preface, the purpose of their book is to help those who read it to "develop an understanding of the following key areas and their interrelationships: the strategic role of a supply chain, the key strategic drivers of supply chain performance, and [the] analytical methodologies for supply chain analysis." I think their material will be of greatest interest and value to executives who are now centrally involved in management of larger organizations' supply chains. However, I think their book will also be of substantial benefit to others who are directly or indirectly involved as strategic allies in those supply chains, those who can also help to ensure effective management of them.

Chopra and Meindl carefully organize their material as follows:

Part I: Building a Strategic Framework to Analyze Supply Chains
Part II: Designing the Supply Chain Network
Part III: Planning Demand and Supply in a Supply Chain
Part IV: Planning and Managing Inventories in a Supply Chain
Part V: Designing and Planning Transportation Networks
Part VI: Managing Cross-Functional Drivers in a Supply Chain

I was especially interested in the final part because one of the greatest challenges when establishing and then sustaining an effective supply chain is to take into full account the need to get all participants in proper alignment, especially when cross-functional resources to achieve to achieve mutually-beneficial results. In Part VI, Chopra and Meindl respond to questions such as these:

1. What is the role of sourcing?
2. How to achieve design collaboration?
3. What are the most important "drivers" of pricing and revenue management?
4. What is IT's role?
5. What does effective risk management require?
6. What are the major barriers to effective coordination?
7. How to build strategic partnerships and trust between and among stakeholders?

Many readers (I among them) will also appreciate the provision of a "Summary of Learning Objectives" and "Discussion Questions" at the conclusion of each of the 17 chapters. Credit Chopra and Meindl with fully achieving their objectives when they set out to write this book: To help their readers to understand the strategic role of a supply chain, the key strategic drivers of supply chain performance, and the analytic methodologies for supply chain analysis.

Bravo!

True stories and data which shaped people for decades

At the outset, I will state that my company reprinted this 1933 gem. Amazon's listing incorrectly states that the volume is 112 pages, it is rather, only 92 pages.

There were families without milk... for three years. The railway workers' families interviewed in this government study, represented one of the more stable and well-to-do segments of society. The facts represented in the numerous tables and family profiles, send a stark wake up call to us today. We certainly can learn from the hardy stock of these depression era pioneers. There is also great benefit in that this study can be reproduced today, using the included survey sheet. Analyzing the similarities between the first four years of the Great Depression and financial circumstances today, at the cusp of a yawning recession, will provide keen insight into what we can expect in the future.

One of the most recent accounts dealing with Ammonites from the Coniacian stage in its type area as well as other major Coniacian localities in France. Extensive figuration of type material, discussions on the validity and variability of Ammonite species that have always been seldom found but nevertheless important for stratigraphy.
