Understanding Income, Wealth, and Inequality in the US
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-21
In his book, The The New Dollars and Dreams, Frank Levy provides a comprehensive and rigorous history of the distribution of income and wealth in the United States, focusing in detail on post WWII development. The book is readable without sacrificing depth, with appeal to scholarly and non-scholarly audiences alike.

Conservative readers and/or those with a neo-classical economic philosophy of life may find some of the author's assumptions, conclusions, and prescriptions for change off-putting. But it is not an ideological polemic. It presents an enormous amount of data and information along with its judgments, allowing the reader to contest the author's opinions.

Highlights of the book include: the gini coefficient measure of wealth and income inequality, the important distinctions between wealth and income, trends in both wealth and income inequality, how education and the service economy have interacted to affect the distribution of income (but not wealth), and the importance of the distinctions between among the experiences of African American men and women's, as well as African American and white women.

Immensely useful and enjoyable--a rare combination.

This book starts where field guides leave off. If you're interested in learning about an animal's habitat, behavior, and distribution in the New Enland region, then this book is indispensible. A great study tool for the wildlife enthusiast who wants to go beyond the condensed text of picture field guides. Note: this book assumes that you are familiar with the animals' physical appearance, so if you're not, you'll need a good regional field guide as companion book.

Meg Hickling is a nurse who addresses all the stages of child develeopment and what the kids need to know as preschoolers, elementary kids, junior high, senior high--it is so helpful, and it was a great starting point to frame a discussion with my husband about what we should be telling our boys, 9 and 6. If you liked the "What to Expect" books the tone of this book will be very comfortable to you.

Finally, someone who is not afraid to stand up against the charismatic movement. Oakland presents an excellent case as to the dangers of the Charismatic movement and how their roots lead to Catholicism. He even shows how this movement can be traced back over 2000 yrs ago, from a pagan goddess. I recommend this book to anyone.

If T. S. Eliot had been abused as a child, his literary voice may have been like that of Smith. NIGHT TRAIN is brutal, beautiful, vulnerable and hopeful while not being maudlin in the slightest.

Nobody Said It Would Be Easy

Review Date: 2003-02-09
Nobody Said It Would Be Easy is a great book. It really took me by surprise. From the cover and the title I presumed that it would be a sort of cheesy adventure book. It proved me wrong.
The book is about a boy called Lance. He and his father live on a ranch in Canada. A while earlier, Lance cut his hand really bad when he tried to intervene in a knife fight to save his friend. Now, several months later, the cast can finally come off. But something happens that Lance wasn't counting on. He can't use his hand.
As Lance struggles to accept the fact that he'll probably never be able to use his hand again, other side plots come in. The tension mounts throughout the book, building to a very rewarding climax.
This book is great! A true page turner.

The best in the business
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.

Pett's work on nonparametric statistics is, without doubt, the best book available on nonparametric statistics. I have always been a champion of Siegel's classic. But Pett has an easy way of introducing each statistical procedure, explaining the mechanisms behind the procedure, clarifying the utilisation of the test, linking nicely with SPSS (albeit now a rather outdated version) and - best of all - gives guidelines for reporting the results. Pett's writing style is very accessible and precise - how nice to find a social worker who knows about statistics! Even novice researchers will find this book understandable. Check out her other work on factor analysis for a similarly outstanding work.

Stunning collection of poems

Review Date: 2008-01-08
I've read Kirsten Dierking's two collections of poetry, first, One Red Eye, and now,Northern Oracle and am stunned with her brilliance with language. I thought she started out strong in One Red Eye, but I can see how her creating poems inspired by the awful experience of rape she survived as a college student would unsettle some readers. Her latest collection is sure to find a broader audience, as it's more general reflections on the human condition. In Northern Oracle, Dierking reflects on life's transitions, and makes connections between people, animals, and nature, that simply moved me. I hope Ms. Dierking continues to publish her work, I feel like she provides a voice for my generation. Plus, the book is simply beautiful.
