A marvelously illustrated history of Jamestown colony
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-16
The story of Jamestown is the story of the first permanent English colony in North America. But what this volume in the American Heritage Junior Library reminds young students is that when a fort was constructed on a malarial peninsula in the James River in 1607 not only had the English failed twice before, but that these efforts were coming decades after the Spanish and the French had begun colonizing on these shores. Indeed, after three years the colony at Jamestown seemed finished when the few surviving settles straggled about rescue ships. But the tiny Virginia colony was replanted almost immediately and within a decade had been firmly established. A century after the founding of Jamestown it was clear that England controlled the largest share of the vast new continent.

"Jamestown" tells the story of how Englishmen like Captain John Smith succeeded in securing a hold on the New World. The story is illustrated by paintings, maps, and sketches made by the colonists themselves, as well as works by later artists who had the advantage of historical and archeological research. Anticipating the argument that Frederic Jackson Turner would make in his "Frontier Thesis," Marshall W. Fishwick (consulted by Parke Rouse, Jr., Executive Director of the Jamestown Foundation) focuses on the qualities that won Virginia for the English: boldness, good business judgment, and a passion for freedom. Through the influence of the many Virginians who were Founding Fathers, those qualities became part of the American character that spread across the continent.

This book is marvelously illustrated, and the period artwork lends an authenticity that few volumes on this series can match. For example, the colony's coat of arms with the Latin motto "Virginia made up the fifth part" shows young readers that these colonies saw themselves on a par with England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. No wonder the movement for American independence had so many strong supporters in Virginia. But the most significant part of this volume is how Fishwick tells the story of what it took for the Jamestown colony to survive and then thrive. American history textbooks establish the importance of Jamestown in the English coming to dominant the continent, but this book makes it clear how difficult it was for these settlers to carve that colony out of the wilderness. This book first came out in 1965 but it is still an excellent history of how the colony of Jamestown was established and survived.

Good overview of distributed java methods
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-24
Most books on distributed java cover only one aspect (eg. RMI) in a level of detail that is really booring and time consuming to follow. This book gives a good coverage of available distributed computing methods in java (eg. RMI, CORBA, Voyager, etc.). None of the methods are covered in great detail but they are covered well enough to understand them and to know what you need to search for information about if you do implement one of them. The real value of this book is that it provides a clear overview of what methods can be used in distributed java so that informed decisions can be made as to which one should be implemented in a project. The only downside I see to this book is that there are a number of gramatical mistakes. The mistakes don't make the book unreadable and can be overlooked because the author is European, and English probably was not his first language. This downside is relatively minor, and the author's English is overall very good. An editor should have been used to catch these mistakes.

Do not buy this book if you don't understand object oriented programming and are not an experienced programmer. If you don't understand how to program, this book will be a waste of your time.

TECHNOLOGY IS DESTROYING JOBS, BUT HOPE FOR TOMORROW!
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-11
This book presents the author's assessment of how today's economy, while generating wealth and capable of recovery from recession, is not generating a commensurate expansion in job opportunities. Advances in technology account for this situation, according to Aronomwitz. His analysis and insights boldly and brilliantly challenge the conventional wisdom that technology advancements produce more jobs than they destroy. He also explores the "price of neoliberal globalization, the Reagan revolution, the Clinton 'Boom,' and the downsizing of America." Aronowitz also concludes that an agenda is needed to create the conditions that would "restore our sense of economic well-being and to reverse the incredible power of large corporations..." that, united with political power, is driving down living standards and bringing about an acceptance of authoritarian forms of economic and political rule.

But the author is not technophobic or pessimistic. He is optimistic. He believes what is needed is a reality-based perspective on our economy; one that employs a "tight safety net," creates labor-intensive jobs that expand the "public good," promotes alternative energy resources, and most importantly, revises our paradigm of "full employment" and the "full-time job." He also sees broader, global implications for this big-picture agenda.

The book offers a compelling, concise case for seeing the U.S. economy (and, contextually, the nation as-a-whole) in a new light, based on solid evidence. This is well-reasoned and robust challenge to 'business-as-usual' economic thinking! It casts a bright light on what may be the 800 pound economic and political guerilla of the 21st century.

If a good nonfiction book is one that informs, stimulates thinking, challenges comfortable mindsets, and sparks the imagination, this one passes the test with flying colors.

Poetry that is senisitive, moving, funny AND ACCESSIBLE!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1998-03-27
As a schoolboy I was force fed a lot of poetry. I liked the sound of it, but didn't really 'understand' it. In college I took two poetry classes, but still felt pretty ignorant about it. But I loved the sound of words, so I kept on. KEEP THE KILLER ASLEEP is the 'payoff' for sticking to it. Here are poems that move me, that sound great outloud, and that I can relate to! I ordered this book on a whim, because the profile of the poet appeared in America Online. Once I gave up trying to 'understand' the poems and began to connect to them emotionally, I was treated to a wonderful, stirring ride! In this, his first collection of poems, Steven Blaski builds a bridge between the rareified and the mundane, conjuring a world in language that is spare, provocative and elegant. With sorrow, anger, passion and wit, Blaski pays tribute to those who have fallen and those who continue to fight oppression, all the while exploring the details which inform the poet's own experience. KEEP THE KILLER ASLEEP is an invocation against what would destroy us, a defiant yet affirming work from an incredibly gifted, emerging talent. Steven Blaski writes gay history poems and from there uncovers a way to talk about the world in certain lush and terror-stricken notes. The chilling announcement here is that persecution, AIDS and the collective will have changed the world in which we live by re-locating the witnesses. Take a chance, buy the book and treat yourself to a poetry experience that nourishes you rather than baffles you, that enriches you, and, yes, that even gets you to laugh and cry if you let yourself go.

This book is exceptional, a much needed addition to the study of the great Finland-Swedish (or Russian) Modernist great Henry Parland. It not only sets the record straight (biographical material, influences, readings etc), it also includes lots of insightful information such as letters to and from Parland. I cannot give this book enough praise.

Biogeographical classic!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-31
Although almost 40 years old (as of 2005), this book is almost required reading for anyone interested in the dipteran family Chironomidae, as well as anyone interested in biogeography and ecology. This ground-breaking volume helped introduce to many in the English-speaking world Hennig's cladistical methodology, and linked inferences from this method of phylogenetic systematics of chironomids to the discipline of Wegnerian tectonics to create a powerful and convincing biogeographical conclusion. Apart from the taxonomic treatments of various groups of Southern Hemispheric chironomids (with amazingly detailed and beautiful drawings), it is a well-written book, although its taxonomic detail may make it appear it is meant only for a specialist. (On the other hand, it is NOT light reading). For anyone working with Chironomidae and Diptera, entomology, biogeography, and the history of zoology, it is required reading. And if you're lucky to find a copy available for sale, consider yourself lucky and pay the price. 5 stars.
