An Entrance Into A Mystery

This is the famous green book in which all of us Americans learned about Canadian poetry and writing in high school. We would trudge back and forth with this green book, heavy, knocking at our kneecaps through our bookbags. Between its covers we learned from Klinck and Watters the main four periods of Canadian literature: the eighteenth century, the pre-Cofederation period, the "New Nation" and the 20th century. Perhaps today the editors would include more First Nations people among the writers. For me, as a schoolboy, the book didn't really start hopping till I read some of Bliss Carman and Archibald Lampman. And then it moved into high gear with the modernist writers of Canada, including Morley Callaghan, F.R. Scott, A. M. Klein and Dorothy Livesay. I cried my eyes out over David, a poem by Earle Birney in which two very close male friends go mountain climbing for sport, and the narrator loves David enough to give him the ultimate gift. I alwaus wished I had a friend who would do for me, what he did for Dave.
Robertson Davies seems like a dud stuck in the middle of some cool writers. He's in love with himself, it's plain to see. I much prferred Malcolm Lowry, and the Canadian Anthology does not stint in giving a huge chunk of his masterwork UNDER THE VOLCANO. I also liked George Johnston, the famous Air Force ace of Canada who served in World War II, and his slightly ribald poem called, "Elaine in a Bikini." That mdae the boys sit up a bit it did.
Irving Layton, Margaret Avison, Leonard Cohen brought us right up to the present time and it wasn't long before we were identifying with a new, rebellious generation of Canadian poets such as Gwen MacEwen, Jay Macpherson, and D.G.Jones. It's a shame this book after had to end! I don't know about the rest of my peers but this book gave me an appreciation for the vastness and breadth of Canada that put me in good stead much later, when finally I crossed the frontier and took my first steps on Canadian soil. I was drunk on pale Canadian ale, tottered, fell.

Oooozing bone-crushing riffs, singable lyrics, crowd-chants, etc. Songs are catchy and supurbly executed. Ripping riffs.
Emperor meets Pantera meets Iron Maiden meets Motorhead! Varies from rock beats to blast beats!
Greek mythology theme on all songs. Superb use of a wide aray of dynamics and structure.
Enticingly American.
Best metal album of 2004 IMHO. This is Southern Lord's finest release yet.

Great (3rd) Book on Australia's Carnivorous Plants

This is the long awaited third book in a series that documents the complete range of Australia's Carnivorous/Insectivorous Plants. Like the two before it, the book combines short (single page) semi-botanical descriptions of each species with a high quality sketch illustrating the form and a number of colour photographs showing typical (and sometimes atypical) plants in their natural environment.
This book is not so aimed at the 'how to grow them' shelf, but, at the accurate identification of numerous Australian Drosera (sundews), etc. In this respect it is a 5* hit and a must for any CP grower. Add it to your collection NOW before the print run is sold out (I pre-ordered last year!) - Vol.s 1 and 2 are now hard to get hold of and sell at a premium and a re-print may not occur for a long time.

Revenues, salt tax stamps, interpostal seals--not in Scott

This book, published in 1984, is a catalog of the revenue stamps and papers, interpostal seals (round local labels used in the 19th century), and miscellaneous postal labels of Egypt and the Sudan. It also include those revenues overprinted for Palestinian use and the wildly misperforated "errors" commissioned for King Farouk's personal collection. Feltus systematically divides the material into categories, lists and illsutrates each issue, and, in copious appendices, provides background documentation on their production and use. There are even a few color plates at the beginning of the book.
Peter Feltus has put together an indispensible reference for those stamp collectors who specialize in Egyptian philately or in revenue stamps more generally. My only complaint about this volume is that it needs updating to cover post-1984 issues and new discoveries (I hope the author is working on it). Nonethless, this catalog is a marvelous piece of research and has a permanent place on my philatelic bookshelf.

To the Celt, music was always a kind of magic. Ancient legends tell of queens who lost their hearts to roving bards, of whole kingdoms held in thrall by witcheries carved out of air, wood, catgut and goatskin. Touch this magic on this wonderful CD from the Celtic Orchestra, recorded in Dublin.

Both the exhibition and this catalogue are absolute gems, and can be appreciated by amateurs and specialists alike. Professionals in Greek myth and art may particularly delight in the little Acheloos figurine (p. 334) and Typhon depictions (as on p. 351), as well as in many other images rarely seen anywhere. A must for anyone teaching Myth or Greek iconography.

Changes in the Distribution of Income in México and Trade Liberalization
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-29
Review Date: 2006-06-29
Diana Alacorn's book is a timely and important contribution to the continuing discussion and debate on the policies of economic restructuring in Mexico and their impact on income inequality and poverty. Her focus is on Mexico's rapid process of trade liberalization and the theory held by many economists and policy makers - based on the experience of countries such as Taiwan and South Korea - that this would tend to equalize the distribution of income and reduce poverty.
In fact, in the immediate aftermath of trade liberalization, income inequality and poverty clearly increased. These findings are based on a very thorough and detailed analysis of the original data from INEGI's 1989 Income-Expenditure Survey and comparison of these results to those based on 1984 data. It is unusual in the literature on the relationship between income distribution and trade policies to find such an extensive examination of original data from a developing country.
Diana Alacon finds that there was an unambiguous deterioration in the distribution of income in Mexico between 1984 and 1989, mainly due to the greater concentration of income among the richest 10 percent of the population, which was reflected in the rising share of national income of industrial and commercial profits and income from professional services. At the same time the relative position of wage earners deteriorated and agricultural income contracted sharply.
The overall drop in per capita income and intensifying inequality drove increasing numbers of Mexicans into extreme poverty in the countryside. Rural poverty increase not only in terms of the number of people living below the threshold of extreme poverty, but also in terms of the depth and severity of their poverty.
The author concludes that policies of macroeconomic stabalization intensified Mexico's recessionary conditions during the 1980s and hampered whatever economy-wide reallocation of resources could have been generated by trade reform. Yet her examination of the effective rates of protection across sectors of the Mexican economy in 1989 reveals that the extent of substantive trade reform remained in fact quite limited. These factors help to explain why both distribution of income and poverty worsened subsatantially during the late 1980s.
