A special issue on one of today's most influential and controversial poet/theorists. Barrett Watten's thought and writing
catalyzed the moment known as language writing that informs the political and aesthetic consciousness of many contemporary
artists & thinkers. In interview, verse, critique, and autobiography, Watten is examined in the midst of the continuing meditation,
protest, and conversions of our social clamor.

This book is perfect for any war buff, espeacially those interested in the Canadian role in WWII. Specifically, the role
of secrent agents and the infamous spy camp, Camp X. Immigrating from Hungary to Canada, Gelleny tells his story of becoming
a Secret Agent and his struggles to stay alive after being captured in Hungary. His story is wonderfully written and supremely
interesting. This is the most fascinating book in the Camp X series thus far.

Why America's largest class should be the wealthist.

John Sweeney through David Kusnet have given us a new motivation to believe that Labor unions can make a difference in the
quality of life for America's working class. The greed of corporations and individuls must be controled. As long as this
greed is the driving force of our economy America will never be as great as it could be. America Needs a Raise is not just
a title. It is the solution to most of the problems in our working class neighborhoods. John Sweeney's book, America Needs
a Raise is full of facts and figurers, but is easy to read and understand. By understanding the value of workers acting collectively
to acheive a goal through collective barginning, labor unions are shown to be the solution to the need for a more equal distribution
of the wealth of our nation.

Extraordinary Photographs Of USA's Past History

Review Date: 2008-03-28
It's truly wonderful to see such a vast collection of high quality snapshots of America's past. This collection from the
files of the Library of Congress makes the viewer of the book feel like they were really there when the photographs were taken.
My own feeling for the pictures was that they were like the source material for the "Saturday Evening Post's" legendary illustrator
Norman Rockwell. The photographs are simply amazing, extraordinary, and in some cases almost unbelievable. Maybe they are
too nostalgic, but they also capture some of the less flattering parts of American History. Take for instance the surreal
double-page spread of a 1925 Ku Klux Klan parade on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. It was taken near the White House
and the U.S. Capital dome is clearly visible in the background. What makes it surreal is that thousands of people are watching
an endless river of Klansman dressed in white sheets marching 40 across waving flags and accompanied by their own marching
bands. The river of white flowed the entire length between the White House and Capitol. The KKK members in the parade numbered
more than 40,000. Gawking parade viewers filled the sidewalks twenty rows deep and stared in disbelief of what they were seeing
in the land of the free.
While this is the example that most shocked me when I first read the book, I was charmed by the scenes of family life, portraits of famous people, Americans at work, people relaxing and having fun in all sorts of picturesque ways. This is definitely a nostalgic look at America's Past. I suspect it is only the tip of an iceberg as far as the gold mine of historic photographs that are housed in the recesses of the Library of Congress. As far as I'm concerned, I'm very grateful to Oliver Jensen for gathering this material together and sharing some of with the general public. Otherwise few of us would have even known that the resource was there waiting to be tapped.
I doubt that many people could pick up this beautifully done coffee-table book and resist the urge to thumb through it looking at the candid images of all our ancestors, including Native Americans and every other ethic group that migrated to the United States. Just reading the book and examining the photographs gives the average person a candid peak into the nation's past. On a scale of ten, this book is definitely a ten and perhaps is off the scale. I can't image how it could be changed to make it better.

In his first book "An American Bible", Dr. Paul Gutjahr examines the effects of the changing nineteenth century print marketplace
on the "good book." With ample references, both period and contemporary, and many helpful illustrations, "Bible" tracks American
Bible production from 1777 until 1880 with an eye toward material conditions (price, binding, production and distribution,
use/absence of illustrations and commentary, and forms of presentation). He also considers the effect of such conditions (as
well as doctrinal, philological, and apologetic controversies) on the Bible's visibility, authority and popularity in America.
Highly readable and informative for readers interested in religion, literacy, or popular culture.

about the heritage of our American Indians"- JFK. Thus begins this book that has an introduction by Pesident John F. Kennedy.
In this book you will learn about the such diverse native cultures as the Inca, Toltecs, Aztecs, Cherokee, Seminole and Eskimoe,
just to name name a few of the indigenous peoples explored. The illustrations, historical photographs and art work is spledid
and quite lavish. Very informative, short histories on most of the major native cultures of the Americus. If you're into
native culture this is a good book to add to your libray.

An excellent overview of the Americian Revolution

The authors are to be commended for their ability to describe and detail the events of 1775-81 in lively and readable manner.
The vivid descriptions of the key players caused me to seek their biographies. If I were a history teacher I would make this
book required reading as a worthwhile overview of the period. One aspect of our revolution that has always intrigued me is
the role France played. Without the infusion of French gold, weapons and eventually direct military assistance our revolution
would not of succeeded. This point has been sadly overlooked, downplayed or "forgotten" by the casual survey courses taught
in High School. This book clearly make the point that without France we may still be part of the British Empire. Highly recommended
as an engaging introduction to the military and political events that resulted in America's independence from England.
