I must say that going into this purchase I held a positive or optimistic bias due to the fact that the book contains some of the only images that I have of my grandparents, Oliver and Rena Meade, that I have. In fact, printed on the cover of this book is an image of my grandmother, Rena Meade and her quilts flowering in the background like Old Glory in a Veteran's Day parade. I will forever treasure this book as if it were an extension of my grandparents' lives.

Receiving the book, which happened to be used due to the book being out of print, felt more like receiving a relative that some pages bound together with glue and shipped in a cardboard covering. Seeing my grandmother on the cover of this book was exciting when I ordered it on Amazon, but actually holding it in my hands and seeing my grandmother in such an angelic way made my heart bounce and so I eagerly skipping through the pages to read her story first.

The book is not for the overtly studious, or the hardcore hill billy researcher. It's not intended in that way, at least in my opinion. There's quite a bit more in the visual substance than in the written. This feels more like a photo portfolio rather than a historical account of the time. That said, I found it as good as I had expected.

The images themselves creep out in a depressing yet realistic overtone. The black and white photos provide exquisite detail on the life and times of the people of 1970s Appalachia. There are images of families, of couples, of old people, of the young and so on. There are several pages where Wendy Ewald's et al subjects have written extensively of their past, present, and future that mesh comfortably with the accompanying images. The photographers have done a fine job exhibiting what life must have been like for those that she photographed, and presumably lived with more or less, and has brought to life a few of those that shared with her their time and personal stories.

If you are the least bit interested in the south, Appalachia, and the people who encompass that culture, then this book is right up your holler.

I want to know more about it

This is a strong collection of Scottish poems. It takes you into the darkness and back to the light that is Scotland and the world today. It has a Camusesque hopeful pessimism. A thoughtful and challenging book with a lucid poetic vision of the here and now. Mr Ferguson is a poets poet with a BEAT edge but never lacks a sense of humour. Well worth reading for the intensity and commitment to the reality of the imagination.

I have several other Parkes books and this one is really superb, beautiful colors, crisp reproduction of his prints. Well worth the money!!

I really enjoyed this chapbook. Anderson is obviously one of the most underrated poets in this country. His work is very musical and his language is charged with surralism. The syntax takes on unexpected turns in the title poem. He also writes about his experiences in Egypt. The work is never cliched. He has an eye for the linear Nile and hears it through a Coltrane improvisation. Who and where is this guy and why doesn't he have more books?

A good overall reference work for spatial analysts and epidemiologists alike.

This book contains a wealth of information on the biology of all carabid species found in The Netherlands. Anyone who wants to learn more about this fascinating group of insects should own this attractive volume, which complements some of the other books that deal more with taxonomy. At this low price, it is also of outstanding value.

David Vance has outdone himself in his second book of photography called "Attractions." I thought his first book "David Vance Photographs" was beautifully produced and the models breathtaking, but this new book of his is just as good or even better. The new models presented in this second book are once again very young, muscular & handsome masculine men. Most of these black & white images are in outdoor settings showing the men practicing sports, enjoying themselves and just relaxing. There are some models photographed indoors in very seductive poses, too, but no frontal nudity images. It's really not needed for these guys are handsome & erotic even semi-clothed. This is surely one of my favorite books in my collection and I'm sure it's a book that will be viewed over and over many times. Here's wishing David puts out another collection of his male nudes again in the very near future!

This Book Helps Greatly if the reader wishes to reference african/ethiopian history without the white-man bias. Hail Negusa Negast!!! All Rasta should own this book. All those who seek to know about Haile Selassie I and have comment should first scrutinize this book and meditate.
