This book is good for learning physiology. But you must not depend on the questions part. Questions look as if they were prepared in a haste just to be done for the sake of form. A lot of questions that don't teach much.

Jeanne McDermott paints an inspiring portrait of her own family, forced to understand and live with the trials and hardships that accompany a child born with Apert Syndrome. She tells the story of Nathaniel with grace and candor informing the reader along the way with insights into the medical, genetic and developmental aspects of this condition. I cried with her pain and embraced her joys through the trials and triumphs of this journey. For anyone who has had a child born with a medical condition this is a must read.

I love this book. My 2 1/2 year old son went through four surgeries in his life time and I can so relate to the recall of ICU's and operating rooms. My son also has a form of dwarfism and will be different. I love her philosophy, so much peace and forgiveness to stranger's rudeness! She has so eloguently speak of the growth that any parent of child with differences have experienced. Babyface will be kept close to my heart forever and I recommend this book to all parents who are struggling with the challenge of bring up a child with a difference. In time, you too will gather the strength and peace demonstrated so well and articulated by Ms. McDermott.

I'm a male and for some time I have been considering having liposuction. I know there are plenty of sucessful results, and I have heard the stories of disasters as well. I have been overly cautious in making the decision to move forward. I have some fat pockets that I do not want to live with if I dont have to. I learned more from The Little Book of Lipo than I had gleaned from reading hundreds of websites, surgeons brochures, or visting with docs in their office for consultation. This book tells it all, including plenty of information I had not even thought to consider. I still have made no decision, but I am now informed. The book is a great little read for anyone considering the lipo procedure.

Not helpful book on liposuction

Review Date: 2008-07-28
I bought the book, hoping to get copies of it for my patients who are about to undergo laser assisted liposuction. Not only is there very little on laser assisted liposuction it basically stays with the subject of traditional liposuction with a tiny blurb on laser applications.

My practice is an internal medicine/laser practice and the author states in several chapters how careful a patient must be on choosing their doctor and that the doctor must be a plastic surgeon. There are many specialties of doctors offering the procedure and to omit all general physicians from performing it would be to omit many outstanding physicians. The book is too repetitious in this subject instead of just stating her opinion once on physician selection.

I gave it to my practice partner to read and stated that we would be unable to offer it to our patients or they would go running from us. It is my firm belief that liposuction has advanced to laser assisted lipo and that qualified laser physicians can offer a beautiful procedure, which is half art, half science. That is, sculpting the areas of treatment requires a keen eye for symmetry and outcome.

Best information you can possibly find

Review Date: 2008-07-29
This book is a gold mine! I spent several hours over many months researching medical tourism online. Had I simply read this book, my research would have been far quicker and far more informative. Beauty From Afar doesn't just talk about the industry, but gives solid advice on anything you could possibly want to know about getting surgery outside of the country. I was most surprised to read about Brazil (and Dr. Patanguy) as being at the forefront of advanced cosmetic surgery. Also of interest was the focus on Costa Rica. With direct flights from many major US cities, why would anyone go to the Far East when Costa Rica has an abundance of top-quality surgeons. You can get to Costa Rica within a few hours by plane. The price might be a bit more expensive than Thailand, but the ease of travel makes a huge difference.

I had to get four crowns put in my mouth a couple of years ago. It cost me $2,000 out of pocket. And that was WITH dental insurance!! And, that was after fighting with my insurance company for two months to approve the care. And the quality wasn't all that great. I could have had far better quality, care, and price had I had this done during a recent trip to Costa Rica. Probably for about $800. Or, I could have driven down to Mexico from Tucson, where I used to live.

What was also interesting is the author's approach to choosing medical travel. He recommends picking a country first. Then research the surgeons and facilities. Much of the research on the internet is very vague. The author cuts right to the chase, giving more relevant and reliable information than any other source.

My brother is in need of some major dental work and needs his eyes lifted. His eyelids hang over his eyes. People tell him that this could be covered by insurance, but it's not. And his dental insurance pays next to nothing. So I am helping him to have all of his dental work and eye lid surgery done in Costa Rica. This book has been a heaven sent.

If you are considering any sort of cosmetic work, pick up this book first.

If you are considering going abroad for any medical/dental care, I highly recommend that you spend a serious amount of time doing "due diligence" - IE. Research, Investigate and Get First Hand Recommendations.

I have work in International Medicine for 18 years. I have personally known outstanding dentist and medical doctors from countries all over the world, including those countries that Jeff Schult listed in this book (Brazil, Argentina, Mexico etc.). However, often in the same countries, I have meet and seen the work of incompetent, ignorant and unprofessional doctors as well. That said, I would have no hesitation getting certain medical & dental procedures in certain countries if I knew WHO would do WHAT, WHERE and HOW. That will take research.

Thus, above all do your homework. Start with a few good books. Jeff Schult has written a good primer. He set an excellent example of doing your homework when he wrote in his chapter titled: "Research, Research, Research" where he notes that he read books, gathered more than 1500 news stories and saved 6000 post from internet forums. This book, along with Josef Woodman's, "Patients Beyond Borders", can help you begin building a solid information base upon which you can make your plans. Happy Travels. Strongly recommended 4.5 stars

I was looking for information on Thailand. I had better luck on the Internet and my cosmetic trip turned out fine. Since there was little on Thailand I didn't look into what else was in there. So it may be fine for other countries--I don't know.

In a few months I will be flying to Vitoria, Brazil for a "total body" makeover with Dr. Fabio Zamprogno Mendes ([...]) thanks to Jeff's book on medical tourism (I'll write back in September and share the results!) After reading the book I had complete confidence to travel outside the U.S. for plastic surgery and the tools to adequately research everything I needed to know to make my trip a success. It's interesting that you may know one or two people who have gone to a U.S. plastic surgeon but the foreign docs have forums where all patients share. I know much more about my foreign doctor and what his patients think of him than I did with any plastic surgeon in the U.S. I can have everything done that I've dreamed of and afford it. My bill will be 60 to 70% cheaper than what I would pay here. By all means, read Jeff's book and embark on the make-over journey you have always wanted!

Like some of the others here, I came across this book because I work for a website that contains information about cosmetic surgery. I research articles and books for the website Breast Implants USA, and Dr. Engler's book has helped my understanding of many procedures and products. He speaks in a clear, concise way which is understandable by the lay person -- which is great because, if you've ever researched this stuff, you know how difficult it can be to understand some of the medical terminology. Engler takes the extra effort to make all the information real, interesting and accessible.

As someone who operates a popular and very informative breast implant web site and forum...I cannot recommend this book enough. Dr. Engler covers everything, including information on other plastic surgery techniques, such as liposuction, breast lifts, breast reduction, and tummy tucks. The complete history of breast implants is covered, as well as the types of implants available (saline and silicone), the silicone controversy, shapes of various implants, placement of the implants, possible risks and complications, as well as before and after photos. This book really has everything. You will learn what to expect at your consultation, to anesthesia, to what the neighbors will say.

Plastic surgery is not something to be taken lightly. Much thought should go into the reasons WHY you want to have the surgery. This is covered in the book as well.

Dr. Engler is a highly respected surgeon, and is a wonderful authoritative source on breast augmentation. If you are contemplating any of the procedures outlined in this book, I urge you to read this book.

Concise, yet thorough. BRAVO!

I have run a popular plastic surgery resource website, IMPLANTFORUM.COM, for over 4 years and I cant think of a thing Dr. Engler neglected to mention in this book, BodySculpture! Dr. Engler covers everything. From what to expect before, during & after surgery to the emotional aspect of undergoing plastic surgery. Each procedure (breast augmentation, breast reduction, liposuction and tummy tucks) is explained thoroughly, yet in easy to understand laymans terms. He details what youll get from a consult and all your options, to how to prepare for surgery and what transpires during surgery. He lists the risks of each surgery and what to expect when recovering and he does not sugar coat! Bravo!

The book includes lots of before and afters of each surgery, which is a great reference if you are planning on surgery or even if you are only contemplating surgery.

Dr. Engler is a graduate of Yale and is a ABPS board-certified plastic surgeon (the ONLY plastic surgery board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties). He was listed in 'The Best New York Metro Area Doctors' and in New York Magazine's The Best Doctors in New York. His office is in New York City.

Written by one of the country's most prominent and well known cosmetic surgeons, Dr. LaBruna has been surgeon to some of the most powerful and famous celebrities in the United States and abroad. From his practice at the New York Hospital and Weill Medical College of Cornell University in the heart of Manhattan, this book distills and dispenses Dr. Labruna's nearly two decades of experience gained from serving some of the world's most elite and demanding clientele. Now any patient can access these pearls of wisdom wherever they may be located, from finding a competent surgeon in their local region to what a patient may expect from particular cosmetic procedures. A patient-oriented advisory text for persons considering cosmetic surgery has been a notable unmet need in this field for some considerable time. This text is now the first of its type to meet this need exquisitely, and in such clear and concise language accessible to the layperson. This contribution is a true rare gem and a must read. That it is written by one of the field's most prominent and pivotal leaders makes it all the more remarkable and its recommendations all the more compelling. It is an instant seminal contribution to the field of cosmetic surgery that will endure for decades to come, benefiting future cosmetic surgery patients wherever they may be located. It is the text of first choice that I refer my patients to when they initially inquire about a possible cosmetic surgery procedure. It is highly recommend.

"Stepping Out of the Bubble : Reflections On the Pilgrimage of Counseling Therapy by James P. Krehbiel is an amazing and outstanding book that provides help and direction to the many people that are suffering from problems described in this book.

I was amazed at how many of the problems and challenges, that the author writes about, are problems and challenges I have seen many people suffer with.

The counseling theory and practice information in this book provides a direction for people that have a problem and are willing to go to counseling and risk moving forward in their journey toward finding personal growth and development, and eventually stepping out of the bubble.

Many people have problems and challenges that they never seek help for and they and their loved ones continue to suffer. This book goes a long way in bringing the thought of counseling to people and helping people to better understand the counseling process.

To author James P. Krehbiel thank you for writing your great book. I am convinced your book will help many people and because of your book many more people will step out of the bubble. I recommend this book very highly and also feel it would be a great college text.

For me, "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" was reminiscent of the renowned books of author, M. Scott Peck, in the style of presenting profound insights into sensible, easy-to-understand language and clear ideas an average person can relate to. Practicing Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist and author of "Stepping Out Of The Bubble", James Krehbiel proficiently shares a portion of his expertise, condensing great weight into accessible and workable solutions for a more fulfilling life's plan.

The "bubble" represents our security and comfort zone, but it is also the inner place where we store the pain of our past experiences and the unpleasant reality of that not being made conscious which keeps us bound in unhealthy and self-defeating patterns. Staying within this bubble limits our emotional responsiveness as we numb ourselves to the coexistence even as unresolved issues unconsciously filter forth. To step outside of the bubble is to courageously examine the contents in all honesty and to face life's reality outside of the bubble. Once outside the bubble, one can move forward to experience life in more emotional depth, fullness and passion. "Being a fully functioning individual is about being true to whom you are and letting things be the way they are," explains author, James Krehbiel.

With brilliant and compassionate understanding, Mr. Krehbiel briefly details methods used and pertinent case examples within his therapy practice. "Self-regulation is a goal of therapy. I educate people in the fact that all the answers are ultimately within." "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" strives to do the same, by giving information on how we become trapped in the bubble and how beneficial the making of conscious choices to leave, can be.

Some of the many topics included within this book are: being assertive, characteristics of an "authentic" person, the integration of each of our different personality parts, the difference between true guilt and false guilt, setting boundaries, addictions and addictions to "manic" relationships, awareness (staying in the moment or mindfulness), grounding, honoring one's inner voice, panic attacks, OCD and mood disorders. The section regarding kids and parenting was exceptional, in my opinion, and I found many points about discipline that made much sense. Also appreciated was the section relating to religion (dogma) versus faith (spiritual) as well as what needed to be said about pop culture.

I enjoyed reading "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" and would recommend it to anyone. It is enriching and inspirational.

James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read. I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey. I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it. I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."

His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!

Stepping Out Of The Bubble by James P. Krehbiel, Is an outstanding book on Counseling Therapy. Krehbiel, is able to put life patterns and fears into perspective so that the lay person can fully understand the mystery that most think is behind counseling. His approach to show that so much of what we seek answers for is within ourselves and with the right counsellor we can become free and step out of the Bubble or Bubbles that a lot of us are in.

This book should be a gift to every teen and their parents, no home should be without it.
